  1957年6月，张桂梅出生于黑龙江省牡丹江市的一个满族农民家庭。在张桂梅还很小的时候，她的母亲就病逝了，十多岁的她跟随参加“三线建设”的姐姐来到云南省中甸县。

  1997年8月，民中分设成立，当时正在住院做手术的张老师得知民中学生最穷，生源素质最差，经费最紧张，又看到民中校舍最破陋、设备最差时，她又主动要求调到民中工作。

  1997年4月，张桂梅被查出患有子宫肌瘤，腹腔迅速膨胀，疼痛难忍。她一面吃止疼药，一面把工作量加到了最大限度。在这几个月里，同事们经常看见她在通往教室的路上一步一步往前挪。她给学生加大了复习量，也加大了自己的工作量，她每天早上6点多钟起床，晚上批阅作业试卷到12点。

She got up at 6 o'clock every morning and read the homework papers until 12 o'clock in the evening.

  1997年12月，张老师的病情复发，领导、同事、学生多次劝她住院治疗，她不肯。她说：“我的事业是教书，我的希望是学生，不把他们送出学校我是不会先走的”。这段时间，她的工作量达到了极限，每天工作10多小时，更不存在星期六、星期天，全年休息的时间只有过春节的3天。

  In December 1997, Zhang's illness relapsed, and her leaders, colleagues and students repeatedly advised her to be hospitalized, but she refused. "My career is teaching, my hope is students, and I won't leave without sending them out of school," she said. During this period, her workload reached the limit, working more than 10 hours a day, not to mention Saturdays and Sundays, and the rest time of the whole year was only three days for the Spring Festival.
